Accuracy

Location data recorded in text form as address. This project has used various automatic geo-coders to link the address field to a British National Grid Coordinate. This method in not infallible and some spurious locations exist and the process introduces error.

An actual measure of accuracy is difficult to obtain but when using the data you must be aware that there are errors in the positioning of the locations where the bombs fell.

For this reason the dataset we have presented is useful for non-commercial and general use but should not be used for any legal purposes.

Weekly Bomb Census for 7th to 14th October 1940

Name

Weekly Bomb Census for 7th to 14th October 1940

Description

This background map records the locations of bombs which fell shown in different colours to show different days of the week.

For the period of the Blitz, there are 559 weekly map sheets for region 5 alone.

Due to time and cost constraints the project we are using weekly bomb plots for the first week of the reporting period- for Central and East London (7th to 14th October 1940) (HO193 / 01).This will provide an overview of daily intensity and proof of concept to hopefully justify the remaining weekly maps to be integrated.

Accuracy

In order to collect the data from a paper map a number of processes had to be developed. Each process introduces a degree of error.

• The paper map was photographed with a high resolution camera by the reprographics department of The National Archives.
• The maps were created prior to the war and will contain surveying and drawing errors that are difficult to quantify
• Digital images were then transformed by adding a geographical reference system. We used a 3-order polynomial transformation with underlying base data from Ordnance Survey Open Data. This process will introduce error when matching the historical image to the current base map.

Aggregate Night Time Bomb Census 7th October 1940 to 6 June 1941

Name

Aggregate Night Time Bomb Census 7th October 1940 to 6 June 1941

Description

This data is for London Area which was the equivalent of Civil Defence Region 5. During the WW2, Britain was divided into 12 Civil Defence Regions. London Was recorded as region 5 and was sub-divided into 9 Civil Defence Groups. The project has collected data for map sheets covering region 5. http://blitzbombcensusmaps.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/index-map-for-h0-193-13.jpg

The maps show night bombing only between 7 Oct 1940 and 6 June 1941, For each bomb dropped a point on the map has been recorded to show the location of where it fell. On the original maps black circles represent high explosive bombs and red circles represent parachute mines. This dataset is a geo-referenced image of the original historical bomb census maps.

They were produced by the Air Raid Precautions Department, Ministry of Home Security, Civil Defence and Common Services Department and Emergency Planning Department.

Anti-Invasion defences

Name

Anti-Invasion defences

Description

This dataset records the militarised landscape . of the UK marking defences built against the WW2 invasion of Britain by Germany originally collected between 1995 and 2001 and updated in 2002. The dataset records the location of anti-aircraft/tank defences and lots of other types of defences.

The dataset contains data for UK – but we have selected anti-invasion defences contained within Civil Defence Region 5 – London.

Accuracy

A location was assigned to each image manually. Locations were identified from the textual description provided by the IWM for each image.

In cases where locations were not identifiable we randomly distributed them images across locations in London.

The images are intended to help the user build contextual understanding of London at the time - not to provide specific images of each bomb incident.

Description

The BBC asked the public to contribute their memories of World War Two to a website between June 2003 and January 2006. We have extracted just a small sample of 460 that correspond to the period of the Blitz/ Air Raids in London to include in our application

Accuracy

We screen scrapped a sample set of stories and then used Yahoo places API to take the text within each story and identify different places. When place name was identified a places API to provide an X and Y coordinate for each place identified in the story. We used this X, Y to create multiple locations for each story.

The automatic text recognition of place names provides a useful starting point to geo-locating memories but does not provide 100% accuracy due to the very difficult and complex algorithms required. Therefore the locations of stories are to provide contextual background rather than absolute locations.

Sometimes it was difficult to identify if a bomb was in fact a bomb so the dataset will contain false positives (bombs identified as bomb locations that are not) and false negatives (bombs that have not been identified – or were not marked on the original maps).
• The error is difficult to quantify but when using the maps and data you should be aware of that there is uncertainty in the data.
